honestly, there were only 4 performances i truly remember out of the 12 tonight, and 2 were truly extraordinary.
as you would have guessed, truly extraordinary number one was courtesy of melinda doolittle. it's certainly not easy to emote the way she did with that song. it's one of those rare american idol performances where you forget about the big notes, and feel the song for what it truly is; you stop, and you listen. and for sure, tonight we dispel the suspicion that melinda's humility isn't genuine.
sanjaya's version of 'ain't no mountain high enough' was pretty much bashed by the judges, but i felt it wasn't as bad as it was made out to be. we're just too used to belting females doing a rendition of that song.
and as usual, i feel lakisha is overrated. seriously, it wasn't good enough to deserve such high praise, although it did triumph most of the other performances. 'god bless the child' has been performed on countless episodes and she certainly didn't bring anything new to it. nothing still as outstanding as her performance in top 12 girls.
i think blake did a good job. i just can't remember how the song went.
and surprisingly, jordin sparks was the one who delivered truly extraordinary number two. randy is right, she has joined the melinda-lakisha race. and if you want to talk about control, jordin nailed that aspect way more successfully than lakisha at the ending of her song. she brought home a disney song with a maturity that surpassed her age. truly brilliant.
