bringing out the elvis in me
group interviews, by experience, are always manic, amusing and simultaneously annoying experiences interjected with bouts of awkward silence where the interviewees stare at each other feeling either embarassed or irritated. and today's interview with the sentosa HR executive was no difference.

it was the 10 of us; not exactly the most interesting group randomly put together. i was pretty surprised zaoxiong and i made up the oldest of the group, of which zaoxiong was already 21 and me lagging 9 months behind. as a result, it was pretty amusing (to me, at least) how some of the kids managed to create an incredibly distasteful first impression.

Excerpt One
boy: i was in the chess club in xxjc and it was quite tough because the chess competition was 1 day before the exams.
the rest: (thinking) erm ok, so?
HR exec: so did you have to give up your competition for your studies?
boy: no, i went for both.
(long period of awkward silence)
the rest: (thinking) and the moral of the story is ...?
HR exec: oh, so he's trying to tell us that he can juggle his time well!
me: o.0 wtf

Excerpt Two
HR exec: so why did you choose (to work at) sentosa?
boy: because i want to learn volleyball.
the rest: (thinking) huh?
HR exec: errr... and how do you plan to achieve that?
boy: cos i can do whatever in the morning and play after work.
me: o.0 wtf

and then someone else (boy's friend with atrociously singaporean-slanged english) decided to bring up the topic of inventing chess mahjong, which was basically playing mahjong with chess tiles, soliciting the second sarcastic comment of the day from the interviewer.

and after being fully lethargised by the bullshit, it was my turn as i attempted to muster whatever energy left in me to tackle a half-hearted introductory speech, which i later realised would fully determine if i had a place in the tourist industry. i hope i did good.
